Meet Myung Jin (MJ) Purves

(pronounced MEE-YUNG JIN PER-VISS)
Owner & Founder

I bring over 45 years of lived experience as a competitive athlete (volleyball, swimming, triathlon, Olympic weightlifting, ultramarathon running, and CrossFit), elementary school teacher, CrossFit affiliate owner and head coach, high school swim coach, therapist, client, mother of three, wife, daughter, sister, friend, and Korean adoptee. These roles have shaped my perspective on resilience, identity, relational dynamics, embodiment, and healing across the lifespan.

I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with an emphasis in Counseling from Dominican University of California in San Rafael, where I graduated with Psi Chi Honors. I later earned my Master of Arts in Marriage & Family Therapy from The University of Akron in Ohio, where I was inducted into the Golden Key International Honour Society.

My clinical training and professional work have included internships, volunteer service, and thousands of hours of direct care across diverse settings, including The Larkspur Center for Brain Injury Recovery, The Rape Crisis Center of Marin, Bellefaire JCB Residential Treatment Center, The University of Akron Counseling Clinic, and Searchlight Family Therapy private practice.

I am trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Level 1 & 2 Gottman Method Couples Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). I remain committed to ongoing consultation, continuing education, and professional development.

I am a member of the American Association for Marriage & Family Therapy (AAMFT) and the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA).

The Meaning of Kintsugi (KINT-soo-gee)

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending damaged areas with gold seams. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object; something to be embraced and valued, rather than hidden or discarded.

As with pottery, things can and do fall apart in life, and uninvited challenges and mistakes are how we learn, grow, and thrive. The parts of you that have been hurt or strained can become places of growth, meaning, and rebuilding. You don't have to hide your life scars or disguise your story.

My therapy practice is rooted in the belief that your breaks and repairs are a valuable part of your story, and that you are not defined by damage, but by your resilience and integration.

My Approach

Kintsugi Counseling Services is client-centered, meaning I work to understand clients as they see themselves, meet them where they are in their life journey, and gently support them as they move toward the life they want to cultivate.

The treatment plan is an ongoing, collaborative process. Just as a well-fitted garment needs tailoring, a treatment plan should be personalized to you.

Why Book a Complimentary 30-min Consultation with MJ?

Just as you might shop around for a hair stylist, a primary care physician, a dentist, or even a fitness coach, it can be helpful to shop around for a therapist until you find the right fit. I am not the right therapist for everyone — and not everyone is the right fit for me.

I encourage you to schedule a complimentary 30-minute consultation so we can discuss your needs and goals, and I can assess whether my services may be appropriate or whether a referral may be more supportive.

My goal is to ensure your needs are met, whether that is with me or with another mental health professional.
